The Ernest M Pon Memorial Award

Ernest M Pon was an active and dedicated member of NAES who succumbed to leukemia in 1985, after a long struggle against the disease. Ernie exemplified the kind of person who dedicated his life to the Asian/Asian American community. Along with being the annual conference photographer, he was a dedicated worker who, through his calm and easy going manner, achieved remarkable strides in the area of bilingual cross cultural education, counseling, and Southeast Asian education. Because of his dedication to the Asian American community and to life, and his determined battle against terminal illness, the NAES Board of Directors established the Ernest M Pon Memorial Fund. The memorial fund recognizes and allocates monies to Asian and Asian American organizations dedicated to human rights and equal justice, as well as furthering research concerning Asians. Ernie's life work for the Chinese/Asian community will be carried on through the fund. If you are interested in making a donation to the fund, make your checks out to the NAES Ernest M Pon Memorial Fund and send them to Barbara Hiura, 1167 Janis Way, San Jose, CA 95125. Your name will be mentioned in the NAES Ethnic Reporter which will also include donation recipients. To nominate a group for the Pon Award, please contact Prof. Sandra J. Holstein.
