About the University:
California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) opened in 2002 as the newest campus in the California State University system. About the Program:
Asian American Studies is focused on the experiences of Asians in the United States, with additional emphasis on diasporic, transnational and transborder migrations and communities. Asian American Studies is rooted in the Third World Liberation movement within the United States, and its origins within the CSU system, which arose from student needs, assets, and demands. At CSUCI, Asian American Studies is a new academic program envisioned to meet the needs of our diverse student body. Our goal is to inaugurate Asian American Studies on this campus, which has had a sizable yet historically underserved Asian American population in Ventura County. While Asian Americans account for 8 percent of the population countywide, it is most densely concentrated in the Southeastern part of the county surrounding CSUCI with populations ranging from 11-12 percent in those zip codes.
About the Position:
The California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI) invites candidates to apply for one Tenure-track faculty position (assistant or associate professor) with teaching and research focus in Asian American to begin Fall 2024. As the inaugural member of our Asian American Studies Program, candidates will be expected to teach an introductory lower-division Asian American Studies survey course that examines the experiences of Asian-Americans in the United States, as well as develop new courses according to expertise and curricular need. The successful candidate will guide the program as it grows and develops at CSUCI. This position will entail curriculum and program development as well as efforts to recruit faculty and students and collaborate with other programs. In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and service to the program, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion.
Minimum Degree Requirements:
Candidates must possess a Ph.D./Doctoral Degree/MFA in Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies or closely related discipline/field. Advanced ABD candidates will be considered with a terminal degree completed by their start date in August 2024. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Asian American Studies, candidates may have a degree in various humanities (including but not limited to History, Fine and Applied arts, English) or social science disciplines (including but not limited to Anthropology, Sociology, Political science) so long as they have a record of teaching, research and publishing in Asian American Studies.\
Required Qualifications:
• Applicants should hold research and scholarly expertise in Asian American Studies, or closely related fields.
• Applicants should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching Asian American Studies
• Experience with curriculum and program development within the field of Asian American Studies.
• Applicants should demonstrate the commitment to effectively work with and engage a diverse student population and evidence of how they would successfully mentor minoritized students with special focus on Latinx, Black/African American, American Indian, and Asian/Asian American/Pacific Islander students.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Leadership skills in building relationships with community leaders and organizations.
• Applicants should have experience in academic program administration and curricular development on par with a program/departmental chair or coordinator
• Experience employing culturally responsive pedagogy in which effective engagement and learning occur among a racially diverse student population
• Experience with creating a student-centered learning environment(s)
• Experience with adopting inclusive approaches to advising or mentoring
• Experience in or potential to do research that includes working with students from racially diverse backgrounds
• Potential to develop community engagement projects or service learning with racially diverse communities.
• Commitment to collaborate with other Ethnic Studies programs.
Responsibilities: Faculty success at CSUCI is measured by three criteria: teaching effectiveness; contributions to one’s field of study, and service to the University and Community.
• The standard teaching assignment is 12 units (4 courses per semester). However, new probationary faculty members in their first two years teach 9 units per semester (3 courses).
• Weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, and service to the department, college, and university.
• The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and program in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion.
• Successful candidates will develop new courses as needed by the Program. Teaching in other departments is possible, depending on the candidate’s interests.
• Provide future-oriented guidance in the continuing evaluation and development of the curriculum; assure that the program outcomes and curriculum are reflective of relevant professional standards.
• Capacity to foster faculty inter-relationships and ability to manage interactions involving faculty, students, and staff and to handle areas of controversy.
• Tenure-track faculty members participate in shared governance, usually in Program, College, and University committees and other service assignments.
• The service for this position will be Program development. In service, mentoring students and working collaboratively with other Ethnic Studies programs and the Asian American community of Ventura County.

Starting salaries at CSU Channel Islands are equity-minded and are generally at the lower half of the salary range.
