DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

The Ethnic Studies Department has been in existence for more than 50 years at Sacramento State. The Department is comprised of the following programs: Asian American Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, General Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, Pan African Studies, and Teachers in Urban Settings or Teachers in Bilingual Education. Ethnic Studies is a degree-granting interdisciplinary program offering course work in the study of the past and present histories, cultures, languages and issues that define ethnic group experiences in the United States. In addition to its teaching mission, the department is involved in research and community-based projects.

The Department of Ethnic Studies is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of 11 academic departments, three independent and interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes. The College is a congenial and cohesive unit both academically and administratively. Our campus community represents the broad diversity of our state, and we believe that all are enriched and unified by this diversity. POSITION DETAILS:

The Department of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Sacramento invites applications for two full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor positions beginning Fall 2024. Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, or related discipline preferred. J.D. (Juris Doctor), Ed.D., MFA, or ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by July 1, 2024.

The Department seeks candidates with the preparedness to teach undergraduate Ethnic Studies courses including: ETHN 11: Introduction to Ethnic Studies (G.E. Area F); ETHN 100: Ethnic America; ETHN 53: Introduction to Native American Studies (G.E. Area F); and ETHN 140: Native American Experience.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, or related discipline. J.D. (Juris Doctor), Ed.D., MFA or ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by July 1, 2024.
Demonstrated proficiency in Federal Indian Tribal Law and Politics and/or Native American Health and Wellness or associated topics (please state which field/s in your cover letter).
Demonstrated proficiency in California Native people, communities, and Nations.
Demonstrated preparedness to teach courses in Native American Studies such as ETHN 53 (Introduction to Native American Studies) and ETHN 140 (Native American Experience).
Demonstrated preparedness to teach courses in general Ethnic Studies such as ETHN 11 (Introduction to Ethnic Studies) and ETHN 100 (Ethnic America).
Demonstrated active research interest in Native American Studies/Ethnic Studies.
Demonstrated potential to build collaborative partnerships with California Indian and Native American communities.
Demonstrated experience communicating and working effectively with a diverse student population.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Specialization in two more of the following areas: California Indian studies, federal Indian law, sovereignty, tribal governments, health and wellness, social welfare, tribal leadership, settler colonialism, activism, higher education/tribal colleges, k-12 education, cultural revitalization, art, criminalization, genocide, traditional ecological knowledge, economic development, gender and sexuality, family studies, decolonization, and/or Native epistemologies.
Demonstrated experience as a teaching assistant, college/university lecturer, or professor in Native American Studies and/or Ethnic Studies.
Demonstrated preparedness to mentor underrepresented, first-generation college students.
Demonstrated preparedness to create and promote anti-racism in the curriculum and classroom.
Demonstrated interest in developing and teaching online/hybrid courses at the University level.

OTHER SPECIFICS ABOUT THE POSITION:

The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 – $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $75,000.
