Assistant Professor in Afro-Hispanic Studies-Washington University in Saint Louis

The Department of Romance Languages & Literatures (RLL) at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Afro-Hispanic Studies to begin in the fall semester of 2025.

We seek an exceptional scholar whose approach to Afro-Hispanic Studies will help to build the future of Hispanic Studies at Washington University and will contribute meaningfully to the field at both a national and international level. We thus welcome applications from scholars whose transdisciplinary research and teaching focus on the cultural experiences of African-descended peoples in Iberia and the Americas and their Spanish-speaking diasporic communities worldwide. We are especially interested in applicants whose work explores cross-geographical and transhistorical conversations on global racial and ethnic formations. We expect that this Assistant Professor in Afro-Hispanic Studies position will contribute to RLL’s role in establishing Washington University’s visibility as a leader in the study of race and ethnicity.

A Ph.D. with an emphasis related to Afro-Hispanic Studies is required at the time of appointment. Responsibilities will include conducting and publishing scholarly research; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; advising and mentoring a diverse student body; and other duties assigned by the University. Moreover, the new colleague will be eligible for research support from the Center for the Humanities and the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Equity. The teaching load is two (2) courses per semester. Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. no later than June 30, 2025.

RLL comprises a vibrant community of scholars whose research and teaching, increasingly organized around interdisciplinary, transnational, and hemispheric perspectives, are at the forefront of the humanities at Washington University. Colleagues in our department collaborate with interdisciplinary departments and programs such as Latin American Studies, Global Studies, African and African American Studies, American Culture Studies, Comparative Literature and Thought, and Film and Media Studies, as well as other departments and research centers across the University.
