Assistant Professor, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies-Gonzaga University
The Department of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies (CRES) at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA., invites applications for an assistant professor tenure-track position beginning the fall 2025 semester. Gonzaga University is an internationally prominent university with a faculty dedicated both to innovative teaching and ongoing teaching development and to socially transformative and justice-oriented research. We have a branch campus in Florence, Italy, as well as a robust study abroad program.
Our department seeks an individual with teaching experience and scholarly interests in the fields of Ethnic Studies, Critical Race Studies, American Studies, or related interdisciplinary field. Expectations include teaching introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses as well as supervise and mentor students in upper-division research projects. The Department of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies is a small department founded in 2019 and created because of student activism. CRES currently offers a minor with plans on expanding toward a major in the future. We look forward to collaborating with a colleague who has strong pedagogical abilities, with particular sensitivity to inclusive, equity-minded teaching practices and who has demonstrated experience or interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students from a variety of backgrounds and identities, including those historically marginalized in the academy. We value collegiality and have regular interdisciplinary collaboration with affiliate faculty across departments in the College of Arts and Sciences including Communication Studies, English, Film Studies, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
All members of the department contribute to and participate in student advising, reflective and effective teaching that includes equity, inclusive, and diversity-minded teaching practices, department assessment and evaluation, academic citizenship, program development, and recruiting. The person hired in this position will be able to engage in meaningful critical race/ethnic studies research of their liking. Gonzaga has several strategic initiatives which could further support the experiences of interdisciplinary scholars grounded in critical race and ethnic studies, including those scholars who study race, climate, water, and the environment, critical race and ethnic studies approaches to health sciences, critical race and ethnic studies approaches to data science and algorithmic sciences, and critical approaches to race and sports.

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Critical Race Studies, American Studies, or related interdisciplinary field. ABDs will be considered with the expectation of degree in hand by July 16, 2025.
• Evidence of current and future research in critical race and/or ethnic studies.
• Evidence of ability to teach Introduction to Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Race and Popular Culture, Racing Space and Place, Intersectionality in CRES, and Race, Resistance, and Resilience, as well as develop and teach courses in their area of specialty.
• Evidence of inclusive, equity-minded teaching practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated excellence and equity in teaching at the undergraduate level (i.e., through course evaluation data, teaching observation reports, sample syllabi, assignments, etc.).
• Demonstrated excellence and equity in mentoring students from underrepresented communities.
• Demonstrated potential for scholarly productivity (i.e., conference presentation, research statement, works in progress, community-engaged or public scholarship, collaborative work, scholarship of teaching and learning).
• Demonstrated commitment to service (community, university, and/or professional).
Job Duties:
• Teach a 3-3 course load (equivalent to 18 credits per academic year) on intersectionality and race, race and popular culture, and an introductory course on critical race and ethnic studies.
• Provide supervision and mentoring for student-led research projects in capstone coursework.
• Advise CRES minors.
• Hold four office hours per week.
• Attend regular departmental and campus-wide meetings.
